The study found that in a rural health facility in Cameroon, hepatitis C antibody carriage is associated with abnormal liver enzyme levels, particularly in elderly populations, suggesting that ALT/AST can be used as sentinel markers to screen for hepatitis C in resource-limited settings where nucleic acid testing is not available.
