This study demonstrates the potential of non-invasive PET imaging with spontaneous inhalation of 15O-labelled gases for monitoring damage progression and evaluating therapeutic outcomes in a rat model of neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, with decreased cerebral blood flow and oxygen metabolism corresponding to brain tissue loss.
