Two new low-dimensional oxalate chlorides were synthesized, exhibiting large band gaps and birefringence, with the latter having the largest band gap in its family, demonstrating the potential of a chemical scissors strategy for synthesizing low-dimensional crystalline materials with balanced optical properties.
