The study examines the effect of hydrophilicity-imparting substituents on exciton delocalization in squaraine dye aggregates covalently templated to DNA Holliday junctions, finding that higher dye hydrophilicity results in smaller excitonic coupling and larger center-to-center dye distance, and that substituent position and local bulkiness also impact excitonic coupling.
