This meta-analysis suggests that while there is no significant difference in recurrence rates between total thyroidectomy and lobectomy in papillary thyroid microcarcinoma, total thyroidectomy may provide better long-term recurrence-free survival, with fewer complications such as wound recurrent laryngeal nerve injury and hypocalcemia.
