In patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT), prevalence of concomitant thyroid disease is high, and the level of preoperative PTH and patient age are correlated with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) risk, suggesting a need for routine preoperative ultrasonography and nuclear scan for localized diagnosis and surgical resection if PTC is present.
