In this study, it was found that thyroid nodules with a telomerase reverse transcriptase promoter (TERT) mutation, specifically those that are cytologically indeterminate, have a high risk of malignancy (84%). However, there is no significant difference in malignancy rate between isolated TERT mutations and TERT + RAS co-mutated ITNs, and the histopathology risk description and oncologic outcomes for most TERT mutated ITNs are unknown. Further data is needed to determine if TERT mutated ITNs should be treated aggressively.
