This multicentre study found that low intersphincteric and ischioanal abscesses, Crohn’s disease, recurrent abscesses or surgery, E. coli-positive pus cultures, and preoperative CRP >100 mg/L are associated with an increased risk of fistula development following anal abscess surgery.
