This study found that sewage sludge from four wastewater treatment plants in Rio de Janeiro state contains high levels of nutrients and organic matter, making it a potentially valuable and useful substitute for mineral fertilizers, as long as it meets environmental, agronomic, and sanitary standards, and its microbiological characteristics are evaluated before agriculture application.
