This study compares the use of 3-nitrophenylhydrazine, O-benzylhydroxylamine, and 2-picolylamine derivatization reagents for the analysis of short-chain fatty acids through liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, and finds that each reagent has its own advantages and characteristics for SCFA derivatization.
