This study found that incorporating a range of antibiotics into ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) is feasible, with the eluted drugs remaining stable and above minimum inhibitory concentration for at least three weeks against Staphylococci, suggesting that a small fraction of an implant surface loaded with antibiotics may be sufficient for preventing periprosthetic joint infections.
