The study suggests that increased estrogen genotoxicity in females, leading to higher estrogen metabolite-dependent corneal endothelial cell loss, may contribute to the higher incidence of Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy in females, and that CYP1B1 inhibitors may serve as a novel therapeutic strategy for FECD.
